UIAA General Assembly welcomes world of climbing and mountaineering

Legendary mountaineers Reinhold Messner and Doug Scott are among the international delegates attending the 2016 UIAA General Assembly where meetings start today, Wednesday 12 October.

The event, the largest annual gathering of UIAA member federations and representatives, is taking place in Brixen (Bressanone), Südtirol during the International Mountain Summit (IMS), and is organised in conjunction with the Alpenverein Südtirol AVS and the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). Brixen-born Messner, along with Ueli Steck, is also among the speakers at the IMS.

The UIAA General Assembly itself takes place on Saturday 15 October and will welcome over 130 delegates and member federations from all continents including UIAA honorary members Ang Tshering Sherpa, Claude Eckhardt and Jordi Pons-Sangines.

Norwegian Style
2016 UIAA General Assembly Workshop, Friday 14 October
Featuring as part of the programme at the 2016 UIAA General Assembly, is a dedicated workshop organized by the Norwegian Alpine Club, on the subject ‘Norwegian Style, an appreciated but threatened climbing ethic’. 

Attending delegates from UIAA member federations are encouraged to participate. The discussion will form part of the Visiting & Lecture Programme held at the Messner Mountain Museum on the morning of Friday 14 October.

Among those expected to participate is Doug Scott, member of the UIAA Traditional Values Working Group.  Full story here.
Winner Announcement
2016 UIAA Mountain Protection Award
The winner of the 2016 UIAA Mountain Protection Award will be announced on Friday 14 October.

Now in its fourth year, the UIAA Mountain Protection Award continues to grow as an internationally-recognised forum for projects, companies and initiatives which support sustainable tourist practices in mountain regions.

For the 2016 Award, the UIAA has accepted submissions from 15 different countries on five continents and a diverse range of projects including a brown bear conservation initiative in Bulgaria, the removal of obsolete infrastructures in the Alps, a biogas scheme on Mount Everest, an anti-poaching initiative in Kenya and the conservation of climbing sectors in Chile.
